In the summer of 2004 Mrs. Schwinn and Dr. Lenz from dental-qm® visited an orphanage called "Damian", founded by Mrs. Gisela Borowka on the small Indonesian island of Alor.
Besides dental treatments, the focus was put on prevention of dental diseases in the 46 children and 14 adults.
The "Damian family" is named after their patron Damian de Veuster, a Belgian priest who in the 18th century spent his life caring for leprosy-infected people. He died 18 years later from this illness.
Soon after our arrival in Alor, the idea of supporting Mrs. Borowka in her wonderful life project grew. More than 40 years ago, the certified nurse went to Indonesia all on her own to fight leprosy in this remote area in the spirit of de Veuster.
During her activities as representative of DAHW (German Leper Mission) Mrs. Borowka kept adopting children, raised them and financed their livelihood and education with her private income. After her retirement she kept investing her pension in "her family" and despite her 70 years never tires to give children without a future a home and love.
